"The Midieval city that kept its peace"

Polonnaruwa is a beautiful ancient city located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, about 200 km away from the capital Colombo. The city was the capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th to the 13th century AD, during the reign of the Chola dynasty. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its well-preserved ruins and impressive architecture attracting visitors from around the world. The ancient city is divided into three parts, each with its own set of attractions. The Royal Palace complex, built by King Parakramabahu in the 12th century, is the most impressive of these, with its grand pillars, intricate carvings, and vast, open courtyards. Other highlights of the complex include the Council Chamber, the Kumara Pokuna (Royal Bath), and the Lotus Bath. The Sacred Quadrangle, located in the heart of the ancient city, contains some of the most significant Buddhist structures in Sri Lanka. This area includes the Vatadage, a circular structure that once housed the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, and the Thuparama, a dagoba (stupa) that dates back to the 12th century. Visitors can also explore the Gal Vihara, a set of four massive Buddha statues carved from a single granite rock. The third section of the ancient city is home to a number of lesser-known but equally impressive ruins, including the Rankoth Vehera (a massive dagoba), the Lankatilaka (a temple with a distinctive design), and the Demala Maha Seya (a dagoba with a unique history). Aside from the ancient ruins, Polonnaruwa is also known for its beautiful natural surroundings. The city is located near the shore of the massive Parakrama Samudra, a man-made lake that provides irrigation for the surrounding rice fields. Visitors can take a boat ride on the lake or stroll along its shore, enjoying the beautiful views and serene atmosphere. Overall, Polonnaruwa is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in ancient history and architecture, as well as those who appreciate natural beauty and tranquil surroundings.
